Gilbert Arenas was – for a period of time in his career – one of the most lethal scorers in the NBA. But that’s not what he’s remembered for. Nope, it’s guns in the locker room and a showdown with Javaris Crittenton.

Legend has it the two were beefing over a game of booray on the team plane when both were members of the Washington Wizards back in December 2009. Crittenton – who was losing badly – allegedly threatened to shoot Arenas. Two days later the two reportedly drew guns on each other in the Wizards locker room.

Arenas joined Jeff Goodman on the Good N’ Plenty Podcast and said, that’s not how it happened at all. Arenas claims he brought the guns in the locker room to call Crittenton’s bluff.

“I put the guns on his chair (prior to practice) and wrote a note, ‘pick one.’ said Arenas.”

Then as Arenas tells it, he walked back into the locker room after practice to find Crittenton inspecting the 4 guns that Arenas had brought from home to practice.

“When I walk in I’m like, that’s some nice s–t over there. And he’s like f— these guns, f– this bullshit and then he throws the gun hits the trainer in the foot. The trainer freaks out, he runs tells the other trainer, he (other trainer) runs and tells the General Manager (Ernie Grunfeld.)

Other accounts from people present in the locker room tell a different story. That Arenas was asking Crittenton to pick which gun he wanted to be shot with when Crittenton pulled his own loaded gun out of his locker and pointed it at Arenas.

NBA Commissioner (at the time) David Stern suspended both players for the remainder of the 2009-2010 season. Crittenton never played basketball again and two years after the incident was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in a drive by shooting. His sentence runs through 2036.

Arenas did not return to the Wizards. He kicked around for a couple more season and was out of the league after the 2012 season.

All over a game of cards, some trash and what Arenas describes as a joke.
