Many in Patriots nation are still scratching their heads over Bill Belichick’s decision to cut ties with Josh Gordon who was placed on Injured Reserve on Wednesday.
Belichick spoke to the media for the first time Friday and offered some insight into why Gordon had to go.
“Well, look, we’re not going to carry 10 receivers on the team, so something’s going to have to happen,” Belichick said. “I don’t know what. But, I can’t imagine we’d carry that many players at one position. At some point, numbers have to become a factor when they get high. This is the National Football League. This isn’t college.”
Gordon had been battling through a knee injury but was spotted at practice the day he was placed on IR and seemed surprised genuinely by the move which he apparently discovered on Instagram.
Belichick was asked about that as well on Friday.
“We’re just following the rules.” he said.
As for reports Gordon will ultimately be placed on waivers.
“That’s a conversation for later. He’s not healthy right now, so….”
The Patriots do currently have a glut of receivers with the recent addition of Mohamed Sanu and the imminent return of 1st round pick N’Keal Harry joining Julian Edelman, Jakobi Meyers and Gunner Olzewski.
Belichick was also asked about the Patriots newest acquisition Mohamed Sanu who the Patriots had clearly coveted for some time.
“Smart kid, picks things up well. We’ll see what we can do here. Sometimes as it accumulates – early downs, third down, red area, situational stuff. We’ll see what the load looks like, but he’s made good progress both days. Works hard. Good kid. Is really in-tune and trying very hard to pick up things quickly and get on the same page as everybody else. That’s obviously a long way to go, a lot of work to do, but he’s working hard at it, so we appreciate that.”
