Bruins Buzz: Bruins Still In On Tavares; Carlson Off the Board

CLNS Media and Hockey Insider Jimmy Murphy tracks all the latest news and rumors involving the Boston Bruins heading into free agency.

The John Tavares sweepstakes kicked off in earnest on Sunday and it looks like the Bruins are going to get their shot. Islanders reporter Arthur Staple from the Athletic tweeted that Tavares has finalized his list and it looks like the Bruins are on it.

Starting Sunday Tavares was free to interview with teams aheaed of the start of free agency. Sources have been telling CLNS Media that the Bruins have been interested in talking to the current Islanders forward. Those sentiments were echoed on Sunday by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on his podcast with Jeff Marek:

“As we are doing this right now, I think it is Toronto, San Jose, Dallas, and two of Boston, Chicago, and Tampa. That’s my guess,” said Friedman.

A well placed source told CLNS Media that the Bruins were also exploring what it might take to free agent defenseman John Carlson, who is fresh off a 67-point season and a Stanley Cup championship with the Capitals. Those dreams were dashed later this afternoon when Carlson re-upped with the Capitals for 8 years and $64 Million.

One final nugget to keep in mind, sources told CLNS Media that the Bruins and Oilers did revisit trade talks involving defensemen Torey Krug and Oscar Klefbom at the draft this weekend, but could not find common ground again.
