David Ortiz Reaction From Boston Sports Icons Past & Present Come Pouring In

The former Red Sox slugger is recovering from surgery and is in stable condition as we speak after being shot in the Dominican Republic.

The Sports world was taken aback with the news that Red Sox legend David Ortiz had been shot Sunday night in the Dominican Republic.

Ortiz was shot in the back and is in stable condition following surgery. The alleged gunman is in police custody.

Sports figured past and present took to social media to express their shock and sadness over the shooting and to wish Big Papi well.

Former teammate Pedro Martinez said he was “at peace” knowing his country-mate was out of danger.

Former Red Sox southpaw Jon Lester and infielders Kevin Youkilis and Mike Lowell also chimed in.

Several other current and former Boston sports figured have been sending their loves Big Papi’s way as well including the GOAT Tom Brady.

Former President Barack Obama – who met Papi after the Red Sox won the 2013 World Series – offered his support.

Ortiz was shot in the back at point blank range by a suspect who rode up on Ortiz on a motorcycle, got off the bike and fired.
The bullet also struck one of the former Sox slugger’s companions.
Ortiz is in stable condition and “out of danger” after undergoing surgery, according to his surgeon.
Big Papi’s father, Leo Ortiz told reporters in Spanish, “He is resting right now. He is stable.”
“We have offered David’s family all available resources to aid in his recovery and will continue to keep them in our hearts,” the Boston Red Sox said in a statement.
Ortiz retired from baseball after the 2016 season. He played 20 seasons in the Majors. He joined the Red Sox in 2003 and was a key member of 3 World Championship teams.
