Many researchers have compared e-cycling and normal biking. The focus was on time spent and the intensity of exercising. We all know that cycling is a wonderful physical activity but why is the e-bike so important? Is it too easy? This has been the topic of research of Elling Bere – a renowned professor.

If you are using an e-bike instead of your car, you are definitely doing your bit for the environment. But the question is do the electric bikes adults promote health or the electric motors make things convenient for the riders?

The research revealed that e-cycling did provide good exercise for the body, much more than expected.

In the experiment, the participants included two women and six men. They had to cycle two trips and twice. Two were on e-bikes and two on conventional bikes. There were 32 journeys in all. Tests were done to determine the optimum cardiorespiratory fitness of the individuals and also their resting metabolic rate. They had a portable oxygen analyzer which was linked to GPS as they rode.  Researchers had to check if the riders were intensively physically active or moderately. Health experts usually recommend the intensive or moderate activity for 150 minutes in a week at least.

Each participant was engaged in a moderate level of physical activity. The cyclists on the e-bikes were 8.5 times more active when resting and 10.9 times active as they used conventional bicycles. The oxygen consumption was lesser than anticipated.

It was concluded that e-cycling is indeed an excellent form of physical activity. All participants were involved in an intensive or moderate level of physical activity. Thus, the benefits of e-cycling can never be ignored.  It was found that individuals spent more time in intensive activity as they rode regular bikes as they took more time to cover the distance. Also, it is quite difficult to pedal. The e-bike had a setting which would offer maximum motor assistance. Also, one can pedal quite slowly and stay away from reaching any moderate level of activity.

However, researchers revealed that there was a drawback associated with the study. The participants were aware that they are a part of the study and it is possible that they change the results. It is also possible that they unconsciously cycled with greater intensity than they normally do.

However, it can be said that the test result is according to international research. E-bikes are suitable for those who wouldn’t use any conventional bicycle.
