NFL Mock Draft 2.0: Patriots on the Defensive

Following the Brandin Cooks trade The Patriots now possess four of the first 63 picks in the NFL Draft. Will they trade up, down or stand pat?

The 2018 offseason is full of trades with the latest sending wide receiver Brandin Cooks to the Los Angeles Rams. The New England Patriots added a first round pick in the deal, and the teams swapped a few picks in later rounds as well.

That trades signals a shift in the upcoming NFL Draft as the Patriots are in prime position to move up or down or draft players that can make an impact immediately.

While most of the mock draft has stayed the same since the last update, there are plenty of changes. Some players have risen up the board in the past week while others may slide by no fault of their own. Quarterbacks should go early, and that means players with top-10 potential will be available later on. This is going to be a fun NFL Draft, and here is my latest mock draft projection for how things will shake out without trades.

Round 1

1. Cleveland Browns: QB Josh Rosen, UCLA

With the first few picks likely to be quarterbacks, the Browns can select theirs here and hold off until pick 4 to add their future running back in Penn State’s Saquon Barkley. Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, and Josh Allen are all in the mix for the #1 pick, but Rosen may become the best in the group in the NFL.

2. New York Giants: QB Sam Darnold, USC

The Giants could, of course, pick Saquon  Barkley here, or they may trade this pick to a team like the Bills. I think they may look for their next franchise QB though in Sam Darnold, though Josh Allen could also be in play here.

3. New York Jets: QB Josh Allen, Wyoming

The Jets want a quarterback. That much is clear, but it isn’t clear who they will end up with. I have them selecting the best available gunslinger, UCLA’s Josh Rosen.

4. Cleveland Browns: RB Saquon Barkley, Penn State

The Cleveland Browns may actually get better with a star QB and Barkley as their RB. If he’s given lanes to run he will succeed in the league.

5. Denver Broncos: G Quenton Nelson, Notre Dame

6. Indianapolis Colts: DE Bradley Chubb, NC State

With so many quarterback-needy teams, the Colts are in a great spot to obtain a superstar pass rusher in Bradley Chubb 6th overall.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: S Derwin James, Florida State

Derwin James is the best defensive back in this year’s draft. The Bucs need a ton of help in that department, and they should jump at the chance to add a player of this caliber.

8. Chicago Bears: LB Tremaine Edmunds, Virginia Tech

9. San Francisco 49ers: CB Denzel Ward, Ohio State

10. Oakland Raiders: DT Vita Vea, Washington

11. Miami Dolphins: DT Da’Ron Payne, Alabama

12. Buffalo Bills: QB Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma

I really think the Buffalo Bills will move up to the second overall pick from the Giants, but they may still be able to land their next franchise quarterback at 12th overall in Heisman winner Baker Mayfield.

13. Washington Redskins: DB Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama

14. Green Bay Packers: CB Jaire Alexander, Louisville

15. Arizona Cardinals: OT Mike McGlinchey, Notre Dame

16. Baltimore Ravens: DE Marcus Davenport, UTSA

This is a steal for the Baltimore Ravens. Davenport is clearly the best player available at this point in the draft.

17. Los Angeles Chargers: DE Maurice Hurst, Michigan

18. Seattle Seahawks: G Isaiah Wynn, Georgia

19. Dallas Cowboys: LB Roquan Smith, Georgia

20. Detroit Lions: CB Josh Jackson, Iowa

The Lions need help immediately in their secondary. Jackson can help them take a step in the right direction.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: C James Daniels, Iowa

22. Buffalo Bills, DE Sam Hubbard, Ohio State

23. New England Patriots: LB Leighton Vander Esch

The Patriots will likely have linebacker high on their priority list, and the last time they had two first-round picks they got Dont’a Hightower. Vander Esch is flying up draft boards and he should be there for New England with this pick.

24.Carolina Panthers: G Will Hernandez, UTEP

25. Tennessee Titans: DE Harold Landry, Boston College

26. Atlanta Falcons: DT Taven Bryan, Florida

27. New Orleans Saints: QB Lamar Jackson, Louisville

Drew Brees is not going to play forever, and the Saints seem to like Lamar Jackson. He could be their next lead man.

28. Pittsburgh Steelers: LB Rashaan Evans, Alabama

The Steelers likely are looking for a linebacker and would take whoever is available between Evans and Vander Esch.

29. Jacksonville Jaguars: WR Calvin Ridley, Alabama

Jacksonville seems to be losing a lot of wide receivers. That position may become priority number one before draft day, and Alabama’s Calvin Ridley could become Blake Bortles’ number one target.

30. Minnesota Vikings: OT Kolton Miller, UCLA

Look for the Vikings to add protection for Kirk Cousins early in the draft this year.

31. New England Patriots: CB Mike Hughes

With Malcolm Butler gone, the Patriots will need to find and develop a new #2 cornerback. Mike Hughes is the best available at this point in the draft.

32. Philadelphia Eagles: S Justin Reid, Stanford

Round 2
