{"id":110091,"date":"2022-09-28T15:20:11","date_gmt":"2022-09-28T19:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/?p=110091"},"modified":"2022-09-28T16:42:44","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T20:42:44","slug":"what-is-tightrope-ankle-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/so-what-is-tightrope-ankle-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"So&#8230; What is Tightrope Ankle Surgery?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Whether Bill Belichick wants to admit it or not, Mac Jones has a high ankle sprain. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/five-takeaways-from-patriots-week-three-loss-to-ravens\/\">The quarterback was rolled up on during the team&#8217;s 37-26 loss to the Ravens on Sunday<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adamschefter\/status\/1574541855441707010?s=46&amp;t=SQCLeFOsojjo5jn0FUPlvA\">and according to Adam Schefter,<\/a> &#8220;has what doctors diagnosed as a severe high ankle sprain that would cause many to have surgery&#8230; He is likely to miss multiple games.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The surgery Schefter is alluding to is a newly developed procedure called &#8220;tightrope&#8221; surgery, which typically allows athletes to get back on the field faster following a high ankle sprain.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, when Jones was at Alabama, two of his teammates (Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa), underwent the procedure &#8211; and Jones was quoted saying, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/albertbreer\/status\/1574822455448932374?s=46&amp;t=SQCLeFOsojjo5jn0FUPlvA\">we&#8217;ve had guys that came back pretty fast. Insanely fast. It&#8217;s unbelievable<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Well now, it may be his turn.\u00a0 I asked Mac on Monday if this could be an avenue he&#8217;d take in order to get back on the field. Here&#8217;s what he told me:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 788px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-110091-1\" width=\"788\" height=\"441\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ej151HfEAIeRenrE-1.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ej151HfEAIeRenrE-1.mp4\">https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ej151HfEAIeRenrE-1.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cYeah I\u2019m just kind of taking it day-to-day and making sure everything\u2019s good. Honestly, any injury questions are Coach Belichick\u2019s thing. So I\u2019m not here to answer them. I appreciate everyone kind of reaching out and looking out for me. But it\u2019s kind of just a day-to-day thing. I\u2019m just trying to get better.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A typical Patriots answer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But what is this \u201ctightrope surgery&#8221;? Many have mentioned it over the last several days, but I have yet to hear about what it actually is. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">So, in this politically charged climate where \u201cdoing your own research\u201d is highly recommended, I decided to do just that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.footankledc.com\/news\/what-is-tightrope-surgery\/109#:~:text=But%20what%20exactly%20is%20this,previously%20RIGID%20forms%20of%20fixation.\">According to The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics<\/a>, where I got the bulk of my information, the &#8220;tightrope&#8221;\u00a0 device, (created and manufactured by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthrex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arthrex<\/a>), is implanted into the patients ankle in order to stabilize the syndesmosis after a lower leg injury. The &#8220;syndesmosis&#8221;, of course, are the ligaments that connect the fibula and tibula.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>An older version of invasive surgery that was designed to aide in high ankle sprain recovery, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.footankledc.com\/news\/what-is-tightrope-surgery\/109#:~:text=But%20what%20exactly%20is%20this,previously%20RIGID%20forms%20of%20fixation.\">involved using 2 metal screws to stabilize the fibula to the tibia. These screws are rigid and would have to be removed at a later date, thus requiring a second surgery<\/a>.&#8221; This second invasive procedure is what hindered the athletes rehab process.<\/p>\n<p>However, this new <em>tightrope<\/em> version of the procedure, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.footankledc.com\/news\/what-is-tightrope-surgery\/109#:~:text=But%20what%20exactly%20is%20this,previously%20RIGID%20forms%20of%20fixation.\">allows the syndesmosis to be stabilized in a flexible manner, keeping the natural motion between the tibia and fibula<\/a>.&#8221; The flexible fixation does not require a second surgery, allowing athletes to hop into rehab quicker, and ultimately get back onto the field.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adamschefter\/status\/1574541855441707010?s=46&amp;t=SQCLeFOsojjo5jn0FUPlvA\">According to ESPN&#8217;s Adam Schefter<\/a>, &#8220;<span class=\"s1\">Jones and the Patriots still are discussing his options and the best way to proceed,&#8221; and a<\/span>fter all, Bill Belichick told us (about 100 times), that they&#8217;re taking it &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mikekadlick\/status\/1575161511948931082?s=20&amp;t=Wt2_kQSc8Ga8vZv-m1T96A\">day by day<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s do just that.
