<\/p>\nFOXBOROUGH — Although the faces are different, the Patriots and Chargers might feel like they\u2019re staring in the mirror when evaluating each other’s offenses this week.<\/p>\n
Along with having veteran quarterbacks, both teams run the Erhardt-Perkins system which is designed to create one-on-one matchups with multiple formations and receivers running out of different alignments.<\/p>\n
As a result, these two teams move their receivers around more than most as their top targets play both on the outside and in the slot on a regular basis.<\/p>\n
For Los Angeles, this free-flowing approach starts with Pro Bowl wideout Keenan Allen.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe plays everywhere. He can do it all. So, whatever you need him to do, he can play inside, play outside, run option routes, run vertical routes, double moves, good stem route runner. Again, big hands, strong, big target, tough after the catch. It doesn\u2019t matter where you put him; he\u2019s a problem. He\u2019s one of the best receivers in the league,\u201d Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said.<\/p>\n

This season, offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt split Allen\u2019s usage right down the middle in terms of lining up in the slot or out wide, and his 1,196 receiving yards are spread out evenly between the two alignments as well.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
On top of Allen, this philosophy also trickled down to the other receivers on the Chargers roster with Mike and Tyrell Williams and Travis Benjamin all lining up in the slot on at least 30 percent of their routes.<\/p>\n

And in their win over the Ravens, Mike Williams had the longest reception of the day for LA with a 28-yard grab from the slot.<\/p>\n
For the Patriots, the closest thing they have to Allen\u2019s balanced attack is wide receiver Julian Edelman; most people view Edelman as only a slot receiver, but he has made plays on the outside throughout his career as well.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
This season, Edelman\u2019s been used more in the slot than in years past, likely due to Josh Gordon\u2019s arrival, but he still caught 26 passes for 300 yards outside.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
And the Patriots\u2019 receivers had similar splits when it comes to moving around the formation.<\/p>\n
From a receiver’s perspective, both Phillip Dorsett and Chris Hogan described the slot as a different game than running routes on the outside.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a different world,\u201d Dorsett said. \u201cYou gotta be a lot smarter when you\u2019re playing in the slot. You have to be able to read coverage, and you have to be a little crafty. It\u2019s a lot different, but if you\u2019re a smart football player and you watch a lot of film, you\u2019ll be able to excel in the slot.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s definitely a different feel,\u201d Hogan added. \u201cLittle bit more area, dealing with navigating traffic sometimes going across the field or different leverages based on what the coverage is; so trying to notice things to try to help you with whatever route you have based on the coverage and seeing pre and post-snap reads.<\/p>\n “I think you definitely have to have a little bit of savvy being able to find the spots in the middle of the field in zones and creating a little bit of separation in man.\u201d<\/p>\n As for Edelman, one of the game\u2019s top slot receivers said, \u201cthere\u2019s more space inside, probably. I think you have to study if you\u2019re inside, outside, in the backfield regardless because this league is smart and complex there\u2019s guys flying around everywhere and world-class athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n Asked if more experience in the slot helps him with timing up hits over the middle Edelman told me, \u201cthere\u2019s an art to thinking you know where they are coming from, but everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face.\u201d<\/p>\n On the other side of the ball, the guys tasked with covering Allen all over the field had similar thoughts on the challenges of tracking receivers both on the perimeter and inside.<\/p>\n \u201cThe biggest difference on the outside or the perimeter is that you have the sideline,\u201d cornerback Jason McCourty said. \u201cI think that\u2019s one thing you get used to as a corner, when a guy releases outside, there\u2019s only so many routes he can run. Obviously, you can\u2019t run an out pattern because you\u2019re running off the field. When you\u2019re in the slot, depending on your leverage and defenses, guys have a lot more room to work.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhen he can release outside, come back inside or release inside and come back outside. So I think that\u2019s the biggest difference, trying to do a ton of film study to realize, \u2018hey, when he does this release they\u2019re running more of these routes.\u2019 I think you can read a lot more from the defenses perspective from the backs or formation whereas on the outside it\u2019s just mono e mono when on the inside you have to do more route recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSometimes it feels easier from a comfort standpoint. I\u2019m not going to say one is easier or harder. A lot of times it has to do with the guy across from you if it\u2019s easier or harder.\u201d<\/p>\n Hogan agreed with McCourty\u2019s assessment that the outside was more of a one-on-one situation than in the slot saying, \u201cdefinitely, even in zones a lot of the stuff on the outside is matched. I definitely think it\u2019s more of a one-on-one thing on the outside whereas in the slot you\u2019re dealing with different coverages and different looks.\u201d<\/p>\n Patriots All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore told me, \u201cIt\u2019s just a different part of the field. Sometimes when you\u2019re outside, you can use the sideline, but when you\u2019re inside, you can\u2019t use the sideline. Depending on the call, you have to play certain leverages and go from there. The angles are different.
