{"id":60086,"date":"2020-12-25T23:58:11","date_gmt":"2020-12-26T04:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/?p=60086"},"modified":"2021-08-30T05:30:17","modified_gmt":"2021-08-30T05:30:17","slug":"lazar-jc-jackson-proving-a-worthy-heir-to-stephon-gilmore-in-patriots-secondary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/?p=60086","title":{"rendered":"Lazar: JC Jackson Proving a Worthy Heir to Stephon Gilmore in Patriots&#8217; Secondary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since entering the league in 2018, throwing into Patriots cornerback JC Jackson\u2019s coverage is the least efficient pass in the NFL.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-60088\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Screen-Shot-2020-12-25-at-2.42.28-PM-500x291.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"291\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In that span, Jackson has been targeted 192 times, allowing a completion rate of 51 percent and a passer rating into his coverage of 44.0, the lowest among all defensive players.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This season, Jackson is again in the top five in passer rating allowed (52.0, third) and has the second-most interceptions with eight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Despite that insane level of production, the third-year pro out of the University of Maryland wasn\u2019t named to the Pro Bowl roster, something that turned heads around the league.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As the Patriots head into an uncertain offseason with reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore, Jackson, a restricted free agent, could be the next man up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although Gilmore\u2019s presence forces teams to test Jackson, the 25-year-old is heading towards a big pay-day himself and could get it from New England as Gilmore\u2019s heir apparent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In true Patriot fashion, Jackson isn\u2019t worried about his Pro Bowl snub, keeping his focus on Monday night\u2019s matchup with the Buffalo Bills and top wideout Stefon Diggs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI really don\u2019t care, man. To be honest with you, I\u2019m focusing on Buffalo right now,\u201d Jackson said on Thursday. \u201cI know I\u2019m a Pro Bowler in my eyes and, like, it is what it is, man. If you know, you know, man. That\u2019s how I see it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to his teammates and coaches, Jackson\u2019s tenacious mentality even in practice and elite ball-hawking skills make him one of the NFL\u2019s hardest corners to complete a pass on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cJC is a very instinctive player. He\u2019s got very, very good skills in that area. So, he\u2019s done a good job of improving every year, and I think he\u2019s still got a lot of good football in front of him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Exactly <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QjsUe48R69\">https:\/\/t.co\/QjsUe48R69<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Adrian Phillips (@Phillips_17) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Phillips_17\/status\/1341186935986008064?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 22, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Veteran teammate Adrian Phillips was another player that pointed out on social media that Jackson should\u2019ve made the Pro Bowl, saying, \u201che definitely should have got in, it\u2019s crazy that he didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHe brings it every day, he doesn\u2019t care if it&#8217;s a walkthrough, he doesn\u2019t care if we\u2019re in pads or not, he\u2019s going to bring it every day,\u201d Phillips told CLNS Media. \u201cHe\u2019s the type of guy that, no matter what the situation is, he won\u2019t let you catch the ball. He doesn\u2019t care if the coach is throwing it, if it\u2019s Stid or whoever may be throwing it, he does not want that person to catch the ball.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHe brings that mentality to practice every day, and that\u2019s why it shows up on game day. Throughout the week, he\u2019s always catching interceptions in practice, and that\u2019s why it shows up on game day because he practices it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With those kinds of practice habits, it\u2019s easy to understand how Jackson made the Patriots\u2019 roster back in 2018 as an undrafted rookie and why he\u2019s held in such high regard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">During his rookie season, Jackson described himself as a press-man corner, someone who wants to get up in the receivers\u2019 face and disrupt them at the line of scrimmage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although he\u2019s still very capable in that regard, recently, the Pats\u2019 underrated star has changed his tune a bit, calling himself a \u201cballhawk\u201d that can still play a sticky brand of man coverage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriots presented Jackson with more off-coverage opportunities this year to allow him to haunt for interceptions, and that\u2019s exactly what he has done this season for New England.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019m off-coverage, as opposed to press-man, the cornerback has eyes on the quarterback, and he can get a read on where the ball is going.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 54.797%;\"><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 0px; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/e\/zmru2r\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In Week 1, Jackson sealed the Patriots\u2019 victory over the Dolphins with an interception from off-man coverage. The Pats ran a cover-zero blitz without a deep safety. Jackson plays his man with an outside shade opening towards the field, allowing himself to watch quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in the pocket and stay close to his man. When Fitzpatrick targets tight end Mike Gesicki in the slot, Jackson peels off his man to beat Gesicki to the ball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cLike my coach says all the time, you\u2019ve just got to be advantageous. I\u2019m a ballhawk. I just make plays. Just play fast, go make plays on the ball,\u201d Jackson told me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In New England\u2019s win over the Jets in Week 9, Jackson got another chance to be a ballhawk and make a play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 54.565%;\"><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 0px; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/e\/aucwsd\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This time, the Patriots ran an inverted cover-two structure. Jackson\u2019s role in the play is to replace the deep-half safety as Devin McCourty rotates into the box. The middle of the field open look makes the deep post tempting for quarterback Joe Flacco, but Jackson tracks the ball and ends up in a better position than the receiver.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Over the last two games of the season, Jackson will assume the top spot on the Patriots\u2019 depth chart with Stephon Gilmore now on injured reserve with a partially torn quad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gilmore also missed three games earlier this season where Jackson drew assignments with Diggs, Jets wideout Breshad Perriman, and Ravens receiver Marqise Brown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In that first test as a number one corner, Jackson produced mixed results allowing 181 yards and two touchdowns into his coverage on the Bills\u2019 Pro Bowler and Perriman in Weeks 8-9 (he also had two interceptions).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This time around, Jackson is hoping for better results to prove he belonged in the Pro Bowl while showing his head coach that he can take over Gilmore&#8217;s mantle if he were to leave this offseason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI just have to step up and be that guy. Just have to be that guy and be the number one corner. Not just be out there just to be out there. I\u2019ve got to play like a number one corner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI feel like I had an OK season. I could have done much better,\u201d Jackson continued. \u201cI can be way better than I was this year, trust me. They haven\u2019t seen nothing yet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As is the case for most good corners, Jackson doesn\u2019t lack confidence and has positioned himself for a second contract with the Patriots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the past, New England has shelled out big-money for corners once, but usually not twice, and some haven\u2019t received second contracts after their rookie deals expire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Belichick didn\u2019t match a massive offer from the Titans for former Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler. Another UDFA turned star in New England.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriots also let Pro Bowl corner Asante Samuel walk after falling out of favor with the coaching staff. Jackson doesn\u2019t have a sour ending as Samuel did, but he probably best resembles the former Pats cornerback from a playing style perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0px;
