{"id":61772,"date":"2021-02-08T18:58:35","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T23:58:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/?p=61772"},"modified":"2021-08-30T06:17:36","modified_gmt":"2021-08-30T06:17:36","slug":"lazar-tom-brady-went-back-to-his-roots-to-capture-seventh-super-bowl-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/?p=61772","title":{"rendered":"Lazar: Tom Brady Went Back to his Roots to Capture Seventh Super Bowl Title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In his first season as the quarterback for the Buccaneers, Tom Brady debunked bogus narratives about being a system quarterback.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For most of his career in New England, Brady\u2019s detractors would say that the future Hall of Famer moved the ball by \u201cdinking and dunking\u201d with short passes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, with the Bucs, the now seven-time Super Bowl champ led the NFL in deep passing attempts and was second only to league MVP Aaron Rodgers in deep passing yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Under new head coach Bruce Arians and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, the 43-year-old Brady averaged a career-high 9.2 air yards per attempt in an offense that was anything but dink and dunk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Still, with the Super Bowl on the line, the Bucs\u2019 coaching brass, likely with a heavy influence from Brady himself, decided to revert to Brady\u2019s signature passing plays to dethrone the Chiefs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-61773\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-08-at-6.42.51-PM-500x193.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"193\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To capture his seventh Super Bowl title and fifth Super Bowl MVP, Brady cut his air yards in half compared to Tampa Bay\u2019s first three playoff games and nearly doubled his play-action usage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Bucs surprised the Kansas City defense, knowing their game plan was to pressure Brady with heavy disguises in the backend by returning to Brady\u2019s roots as a passer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Instead of airing it out as they did all year, Tampa used short and intermediate throws to neutralize the Chiefs&#8217; pressure schemes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In all, Brady was 20-of-25 for 184 of his 201 passing yards on throws under 20 yards with only one completion over 20 yards, and the Pats&#8217; influence on the Bucs\u2019 passing script was all over Sunday night\u2019s film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cCHARLES BARKLEY\u201d (PLAY-ACTION)<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The most successful passing concept for the Bucs on Sunday was a staple for Brady and favorite tight end Rob Gronkowski.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.250%;\"><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 0px; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/e\/6siywk\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brady referred to the play in an NFL100 interview as a design that he took from frenemy Peyton Manning in a practice session with the 2021 Hall of Fame inductee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 55.789%;\"><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 0px; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/e\/vrlj40\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Pats\u2019 one-word call for the concept is \u201cCharles Barkley,\u201d and it features a pulling guard or center simulating a trap scheme to get the second level to play the run. The idea is for those linebackers to step up in their run gaps, with Gronk crossing behind them for a catch and run opportunity. In the third quarter, the scheme worked to perfection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 55.485%;\"><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 0px; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/e\/47j7hv\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A little bit earlier, the Bucs ran the same blocking design, this time from the gun with wideout Mike Evans running a crossing route from a stack alignment. The Patriots used stacks to get Julian Edelman inside leverage, similar to Evans above. Chris Godwin\u2019s vertical route holds the post safety in the deep part of the field so that Evans can run across.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 55.603%;\"><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 0px; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/e\/dv35tb\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the first quarter, the Bucs got a 15-yard completion to tight end Cameron Brate using a great compliment to \u201cCharles Barkley\u201d on a screen out of a two tight end set. This time, everything looks the same as the Gronk reception above. Same puller from the interior line, the same route by Gronk, but the play is designed as a screen to Brate. Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu feels forced to fall underneath Gronk\u2019s crossing route, and with a blitzing linebacker, there\u2019s nobody left to defend the interior screen to Brate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tampa Bay hit three of their five biggest passing plays of Super Bowl 55 off of play-action trap schemes, and the Chiefs defense was lost in coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cDUO\/DOUBLE\u201d (PLAY-ACTION)<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Here\u2019s a concept that the Bucs frequently used this season: a combination of Patriots-style design and Bruce Arians\u2019s go-to run concept that he calls \u201cdouble\u201d or \u201cduo\u201d to others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The staple of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Buccaneers?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Buccaneers<\/a>&#39; offense?<\/p>\n<p>22 Double.<\/p>\n<p>?: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SBOpeningNight?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SBOpeningNight<\/a> \u2014 LIVE on Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qnOGGq6XlO\">pic.twitter.com\/qnOGGq6XlO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NFL (@NFL) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NFL\/status\/1356297304437911559?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 1, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Arians was asked about his favorite play in his arsenal during Super Bowl week, and \u201cdouble\u201d with play-action compliments off of it was his answer, so you knew the play was coming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Another throwback element of Tampa Bay\u2019s game plan in the Super Bowl was involving running back Leonard Fournette in the passing game. Fournette had four catches for 46 yards, just one yard shy of a season-high, and helped Brady beat pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 55.765%;\"><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 0px; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/e\/b0mryw\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In this play, the Bucs simulate \u201cdouble\u201d and run play-action, which gets the linebacker level to use a \u201crobot\u201d technique to get to their zone drops. Roboting refers to the linebackers turning their back to the line of scrimmage and sprinting to their landmarks, which in this case, brought no. 56 Ben Niemann underneath Chris Godwin\u2019s crossing pattern. With his back to Brady, Niemann cannot see Fournette release out of the backfield, and Brady hits his running back underneath the defense for a chunk gain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here&#39;s a simpler plot with just crossing routes.<\/p>\n<p>And these are all routes run, to be clear, not just targets. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tudd4h9KTK\">pic.twitter.com\/tudd4h9KTK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Seth Walder (@SethWalder) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SethWalder\/status\/1354532816269271042?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 27, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to ESPN tracking data, the Bucs ran crossing routes at a very low clip to start the season but started calling them more as the season wore on, undoubtedly a Brady request.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Crossing patterns are a significant element to Brady\u2019s success over the last two decades, and when the Bucs had the ball on Sunday, they gave the Chiefs defense all sorts of problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">JUKE\/RETURN SERIES\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lastly, Tom Brady\u2019s third touchdown pass that gave Tampa Bay a 21-6 lead probably looked familiar to Pats fans as it wasn\u2019t the first time Brady threw a TD in a Super Bowl on that route.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Antonio Brown\u2019s one-yard touchdown reception came on the same route that Julian Edelman ran for the go-ahead score in Super Bowl 49, even if it didn\u2019t play out the same way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 55.274%;\"><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 0px; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/e\/hofd5c\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The only difference was the cornerback was head up on Edelman, which led the Pats wideout back out towards the pylon rather than inside. The corner on Edelman in Super Bowl 49 jumps inside on Edelman&#8217;s release, so Edelman fakes an inside break and returns to the pylon for six.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 55.672%;\"><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 0px; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/e\/i8kjgl\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fast-forward a few seasons and Super Bowls, and Brown sees the corner sitting on his outside shoulder and curls his initial release outside before breaking inside for a touchdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bucs head coach Bruce Arians spoke candidly about Tom Brady\u2019s involvement in coaching Tampa Bay&#8217;s offense in his first season with the Buccaneers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although Brady isn\u2019t a coach, it was clear that Tampa Bay did away with most of the vertical passing concepts that got them to Super Bowl 55 and let Brady turn back the clock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo trying to disrupt and confuse the Bucs offense, bringing Brady back to his roots won the Buccaneers the Super Bowl.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In his first season as the quarterback for the Buccaneers, Tom Brady debunked bogus narratives about being a system quarterback.
