The reviews of the Patriots\u2019 offseason upgrades on the offensive side of the ball were mixed.<\/p>\n

Some thought New England overpaid in free agency for their new pass-catchers. Mainly wide receiver Nelson Agholor’s contract was a point of contention, as he isn’t viewed as a “number one” wide receiver, meaning the Patriots don’t have a true number one. Others also had their doubts about tight ends Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith at their respective price tags.<\/p>\n

We can use all the caveats you want through four training camp practices. The Pats aren\u2019t in full pads yet, and these aren\u2019t regular-season games, let alone preseason games (those begin Aug. 12).<\/p>\n

But I\u2019m calling it now: the Patriots’ offense will be good, perhaps really good if they get above-average quarterback play.<\/p>\n

New England\u2019s new tight end duo is already causing problems for a good defense, with Henry dominating at times in heavy red-zone work while Smith\u2019s explosiveness on crossing routes and seams is evident.<\/p>\n

Henry caught several balls going above the rim on contested grabs. He also easily found voids in zone coverage and found success boxing out man coverage defenders on seams and in-breakers.<\/p>\n

Smith would\u2019ve scored a long touchdown on a crosser where the Pats used misdirection to get him alone on the right side of the field for a catch and run opportunity on day three.<\/p>\n

The two tight ends are rolling already, and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels isn\u2019t even scheming or game-planning to maximize Henry and Smith\u2019s complementary abilities yet.<\/p>\n

As far as the wide receiver go, Agholor had an excellent day three where he got behind the defense several times and made a leaping grab in the back of the end zone over J.C. Jackson. The other highlight of the day for Agholor was a deep crosser on a great ball from Cam Newton.<\/p>\n

Free-agent addition Kendrick Bourne is off to a spectacular start in camp. He runs precise routes with an excellent feel for working between the numbers, has strong hands, and is getting open often.<\/p>\n

Jakobi Meyers is still making plays, and even N\u2019Keal Harry had his moments during a red-zone heavy opening week.<\/p>\n

Most of these early camp reports are silenced by saying, \u201cThey haven\u2019t even put on pads. Let\u2019s not get their red jackets ready for the Patriots Hall of Fame just yet,\u201d and there\u2019s truth to that.<\/p>\n

But let\u2019s take a step back from the hyperbole for a second and consider another angle to these non-padded practices: we haven\u2019t seen the Pats\u2019 running game yet due to the lack of contact.<\/p>\n

Despite an anemic passing attack, the Patriots ranked eighth in Football Outsiders\u2019 rushing DVOA metric last season and project for another top-ten finish.<\/p>\n

New England boasts one of the league\u2019s biggest and most effective run-blocking offensive lines. Plus, two capable backs in Damien Harris and Sony Michel, and both tight ends can block.<\/p>\n

Sprinkle in play-action, misdirection, a little James White on third down, and this offense is taking shape.<\/p>\n

The biggest obstacle standing in the way of a complete turnaround offensively is quarterback play.<\/p>\n

Reiterating that incumbent Cam Newton is his starter, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick made that proclamation again on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

Newton’s timing within the offenses structure is improving, and those strides are leading to more accurate passes. He seems to have it down when everything works as designed, but things are still a little delayed once the defense spins the dial a bit.<\/p>\n

The Pats\u2019 quarterback spoke about his maturation in the offense, saying, \u201cin the classroom or when we’re meeting, coach asks a question — boom, that\u2019s where we\u2019re supposed to go with the ball,\u201d Newton said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOK, now you\u2019ve got Devin McCourty showing something, Kyle Dugger\u2019s showing something. Then all of a sudden, [Dont\u2019a] Hightower jumps over here, and all of a sudden, it\u2019s like, \u2018What do I do? What do I do? What do I do? It\u2019s just taking the brain a little longer at times. But hopefully, with a lot of repetitions, it’ll be good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rookie Mac Jones is making positive strides as well. He flashes timing, touch, accuracy, and pocket movement daily. And you can tell that Jones is only scratching the surface in this offense.<\/p>\n

The slight edge goes to Newton in the early going, but it’s not in a landslide. Both QBs are stringing together good throws, signaling that, with improved weapons, both Newton and Jones could succeed.<\/p>\n

At the moment, Belichick is closing the door on an open competition, but both quarterbacks see time with the offense’s key figures. You don\u2019t do that if there\u2019s no chance that Jones could start.<\/p>\n

The product the Patriots’ offense put on tape last season was a disaster in the teams\u2019 first year without Tom Brady in two decades.<\/p>\n

After watching Brady win a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay, Belichick’s response was spending $77.5 million guaranteed on free-agent pass-catchers, along with sizable additions on defense as well.<\/p>\n

Although it\u2019s early, we are already seeing the plan on paper come to fruition on the practice field on the offensive side of the ball.<\/p>\n
