{"id":74095,"date":"2021-08-13T12:53:33","date_gmt":"2021-08-13T12:53:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/?p=74095"},"modified":"2021-08-27T08:57:53","modified_gmt":"2021-08-27T08:57:53","slug":"advanced-stats-report-pats-rookies-mac-jones-ronnie-perkins-stand-out-in-preseason-debuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/advanced-stats-report-pats-rookies-mac-jones-ronnie-perkins-stand-out-in-preseason-debuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Advanced Stats Report: Pats Rookies Mac Jones, Ronnie Perkins Stand Out in Preseason Debuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Below are a variety of advanced stats from the Patriots\u2019 22-13 win over the Washington Football Team in Thursday\u2019s preseason opener.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">MAC JONES\u2019S PASSING STATS<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since starting quarterback Cam Newton only had seven drop-backs, we\u2019ll focus on the rookie here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Patriots first-round pick Mac Jones only completed one pass over ten yards in the air with an average depth of target of 7.6 yards, but the Jones-led offense is taking shape already.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">First, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels mainly called short passes from spread looks with Jones in the shotgun or an empty formation. Jones also ran two run-pass options, three under-center designs, a no-huddle sequence, and his average time to throw was a brisk 2.55 seconds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriots offense resembled the Pats offense of old from a schematic standpoint once Jones was in the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One element of New England\u2019s operation that was a struggle last season was under-center play-action, despite having one of the league\u2019s best downhill rushing attacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Starting quarterback Cam Newton averaged 7.9 yards per attempt with one touchdown and four interceptions on 88 under-center play-action pass attempts in 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%;height: 0px;padding-bottom: 58.621%\"><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The rookie quarterback\u2019s only completion that traveled over ten yards in the air was a 13-yard strike to Kendrick Bourne off under-center play-action. The Pats get the linebacker level to bite on a lead play with fullback Jakob Johnson in the backfield. Jones fires the ball on the money immediately once he hits the top of his drop, which prevents the linebackers from recovering underneath Bourne\u2019s route. Jones\u2019s decisiveness is critical in that particular play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Another marriage between the old Pats offense and the new generation with Jones was the installation of run-pass options, which were a Jones staple at Alabama.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This concept has been in their system for years. RPO power with a bubble screen. Mac is reading the backside LB (#59). When he stays inside to defend the run, it gives the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Patriots?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Patriots<\/a> the numbers on the screen. Easy six yards. With Jones, he has the option to hand the ball off to the running back or throw the bubble screen depending on the read.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Veteran quarterback Cam Newton is the Patriots\u2019 starter until further notice, but McDaniels gave us a glimpse of his long-term plan once Mac Jones takes over in the first preseason game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PASS PROTECTION\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-71476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PassPro-500x229.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New England\u2019s quarterbacks were under pressure on ten of their 32 drop-backs on Thursday night, or 31.3 percent, which is an impressive number for the 11 offensive linemen who played.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Starting left tackle Isaiah Wynn had a rough rep early on against star pass-rusher Chase Young, but Young\u2019s quarterback hit on Newton was the lone pressure Wynn allowed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Outside of Young\u2019s spectacular rush, the other four Pats\u2019 starting offensive line members didn\u2019t allow a single quarterback hit, and only Jones was sacked once in the game overall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Starting center James Ferentz is having a breakout summer of sorts, allowing only one hurry in 29 pass-blocking snaps with the highest run-blocking grade of all 11 offensive linemen (84.2).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two other notes in the trenches are that 2019 third-round pick Yodny Cajuste\u2019s return to a game field showed plenty of rust, while sixth-round pick William Sherman only played five snaps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Overall, it was a good night for the offensive line in terms of keeping the quarterbacks clean.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">QUARTERBACK PRESSURES\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-71477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PassRush-1-500x243.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"243\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the other side of the ball, the Patriots put more heat on Washington\u2019s quarterbacks by pressuring their opponents on 20 out of 51 drop-backs, or 39.2 percent, with two sacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Patriots?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Patriots<\/a> LB Matt Judon is a really good football player. Three-play sequence from last night: <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Shot out of a cannon on the backside TFL on third-and-2<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Recognize the RBs release out of the backfield to register a PBU<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Catches the LT oversetting and jumps inside for QB hit <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tEYNF127bD\">pic.twitter.com\/tEYNF127bD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Evan Lazar (@ezlazar) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ezlazar\/status\/1426184765493891075?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 13, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although it was a small sample size of 12 snaps, free-agent addition Matthew Judon was everywhere for the Patriots defense. Judon registered a quarterback hit, prevented a completion, and made a tackle for loss in his Patriots debut.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%;height: 0px;padding-bottom: 61.518%\"><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Judon was as advertised for the Patriots, as was second-year linebacker Josh Uche. Uche tallied three quarterback pressures, one of which is shown above, where he uses an inside-out move to beat backup left tackle Cornelius Lucas around the corner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%;height: 0px;padding-bottom: 60.348%\"><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lastly, Rookie outside linebacker Ronnie Perkins tied for the team lead with four quarterback pressures, including an excellent speed-to-power rush on Joejuan Williams\u2019s interception. By pushing right tackle David Steinmetz into the quarterback&#8217;s lap, Perkins forced an errant throw.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%;height: 0px;padding-bottom: 59.621%\"><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Later on, Perkins showed good discipline rushing over the right tackle by forcing the quarterback away from his arm side, making a more challenging cross-body pass attempt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New England\u2019s revamped front seven has excellent depth on paper, and we saw that come to fruition in the victory over Washington, where they were pressuring the QB throughout the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">RUN STOPS<\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Patriots third-round pick Ronnie Perkins added to a strong performance by leading the team with three run stops.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%;height: 0px;padding-bottom: 55.501%\"><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Perkins\u2019s performance was solid, but new nose tackle Davon Godchaux\u2019s presence in the middle of the defense caught our eye as well. Godchaux\u2019s upper-body power was on full display above. Godchaux punches, separates, sheds, and makes the stop for a minimal gain with ease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New England\u2019s run defense ranked dead-last in Football Outsiders\u2019 DVOA metric a year ago, making it a focus for Bill Belichick when he was acquiring players this offseason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although it\u2019s only one preseason game, it appears that Belichick\u2019s additions are working out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">COVERAGE STATS\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-71478\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Coverage-500x254.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"254\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriots&#8217; defense held Washington to 5.4 yards per pass on 47 attempts on Thursday night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cornerbacks J.C.
