{"id":82454,"date":"2021-08-30T15:45:18","date_gmt":"2021-08-30T15:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/?p=82454"},"modified":"2021-09-17T06:43:57","modified_gmt":"2021-09-17T06:43:57","slug":"advanced-stats-report-mac-jones-finishes-as-pffs-second-highest-graded-passer-in-preseason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/advanced-stats-report-mac-jones-finishes-as-pffs-second-highest-graded-passer-in-preseason\/","title":{"rendered":"Advanced Stats Report: Mac Jones Finishes as PFF&#8217;s Second-Highest Graded Passer in Preseason"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Below are various advanced stats from the Patriots\u2019 22-20 win over the Giants in the preseason finale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">QB MAC JONES\u2019S PASSING STATS\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Starting quarterback Cam Newton only had five drop-backs against New York on Sunday night, following a trend this preseason of most of the summer reps going to rookie Mac Jones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jones out-drop backed Newton 59 to 21 in the preseason, which isn\u2019t surprising given the difference in experience for the two QBs, but the Pats\u2019 first-rounder made the most of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Among all quarterbacks, not just rookies, Jones\u2019s 92.2 PFF passing grade was the second-highest while he had four big-time throws (tied for second) to zero turnover-worthy plays. The 15th overall pick was terrific in the preseason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Along with making several high-level downfield throws, Jones was arguably at his best operating out of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels\u2019s staple concepts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mac Jones reading out HOSS Z Juke in two different ways last night. Both out of an empty formation with good accuracy and a quick release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Once we have access to the coaches tape, we can review some of the plays where Jones held onto the ball a little too long, as the rookie quarterback said after the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But the only way to view Jones\u2019s rookie preseason is as a resounding success; Jones was one of the best passers in the NFL in August.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PASS PROTECTION STATS<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-73199\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PassProNYG-500x230.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"230\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although it felt like a rocky night for the Patriots\u2019 offensive line in pass protection, New England\u2019s three quarterbacks were only under pressure on nine of their 33 drop-backs (27.3%).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jones\u2019s number was a bit higher than that at 38.9 percent, but the rookies\u2019 average time to throw was 3.06 seconds on his 14 pass attempts, which contributed to some of the pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%;height: 0px;padding-bottom: 62.500%\"><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Giants defense also threw seven blitzes at Cam Newton and Mac Jones, and the Patriots\u2019 blockers had difficulty picking up some of those pressures. Above, the Giants ran a zero blitz that led to two free runners at Newton. Later on, they ran a similar zero blitz with Jones at the helm, and the Pats offense was bailed out by a defensive holding flag in the secondary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With the Dolphins and Brian Flores coming to town for the season opener in two weeks, the Patriots will need to figure out a better way to block and communicate all-out pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Flores is known for bringing heavy pressure at opposing quarterbacks and often utilizes zero blitzes on third down. The Pats failed their dress rehearsal for Flores\u2019s pressure packages, so they\u2019ll need to clean that up in practice over the next two weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The good news was that the right side of the starting offensive line, Trent Brown and Shaq Mason, and left tackle Isaiah Wynn, were clean in limited reps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">RUSHING YARDS OVER EXPECTED\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In a stat that measures how many rushing yards a ball carrier accumulates over expected, Patriots running backs Rhamondre Stevenson and J.J. Taylor paced the league.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Top 5\u20e3 leaders in rushing yards over expected from the 2021 preseason ?<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Patriots?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Patriots<\/a> rookie Rhamondre Stevenson led all running backs with +111 RYOE, nearly double the next closest player, his teammate, J.J. Taylor (+62). <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XTYSKTmE5u\">pic.twitter.com\/XTYSKTmE5u<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Next Gen Stats (@NextGenStats) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NextGenStats\/status\/1432406075089645568?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 30, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Stevenson\u2019s preseason performance was spectacular, adding 111 rushing yards over expected, nearly doubling Taylor, who came in second place in the preseason (+62).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With RYOE, we can see why the Patriots felt comfortable trading former running back Sony Michel to the Los Angeles Rams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PASS RUSH PRODUCTION\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-73198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/PressureNYG-500x227.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"227\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New England\u2019s defense pressured Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and Mike Glennon on 17 of their 44 drop-backs, or 38.6 percent, with four sacks in Sunday night\u2019s preseason finale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Josh Uche is ridiculous. Uche finished with six QB pressures on 27 pass-rush snaps, ranking fifth in PFF\u2019s pass-rush productivity metric this preseason.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Patriots?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Patriots<\/a> second-round pick Christian Barmore rushing on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Giants?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Giants<\/a> left tackle Andrew Thomas: push-pull swim for a QB hit on Daniel Jones. Forces the check down. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/B1YQBNkWkY\">pic.twitter.com\/B1YQBNkWkY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Evan Lazar (@ezlazar) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ezlazar\/status\/1432376377890807815?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 30, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Along with Uche\u2019s development, the Patriots seem to have found an interior pass-rushing presence in rookie second-rounder Chrisitan Barmore, who helped Uche on his sack by pushing the pocket up the middle, then registered a QB hit with a sweet push-pull swim move.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although Uche and Barmore were the breakout stars of Pats camp, fellow edge rusher Chase Winovich beat up on the Giants and Eagles\u2019 backup tackles. Winovich also tied for the team lead with three quarterback pressures in the win over the Giants. Plus, his pass-rush win rate of 40% led the entire league during the preseason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Another summer standout for New England was 2020 UDFA Bill Murray, who had two sacks against the Giants, and was tied for seventh with nine QB pressures in the preseason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Murray\u2019s chances of making the roster are long, and Winovich could potentially get traded in a crowded linebacker room, but both players made strong impressions in preseason action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">COVERAGE STATS\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-73201\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/CoverageNYG-500x176.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"176\" \/><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As one would expect watching the game live, the coverage stats weren\u2019t friendly to roster hopeful Michael Jackson, Sr., who was targeted ten times against the Giants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At his best as a press-man corner, Jackson had some good moments in camp playing a physical brand of man coverage on the outside. But the Giants&#8217; receivers exposed his struggles at the top of routes and in off-man situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On a positive note, core special teamer Justin Bethel was excellent in the preseason in coverage, registering the Pats\u2019 only pass breakup of the night against New York. Overall, Bethel broke up both passes into his coverage on 27 coverage snaps this summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%;height: 0px;padding-bottom: 62.500%\"><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Along with Bethel, second-year cornerback D\u2019Angelo Ross wasn\u2019t targeted on any of his 32 coverage snaps and had a terrific third-down stop.
