Interest payments are calculated by averaging the interest rates on all of your outstanding federal loans and rounding up to the nearest eighth of a percent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this generally doesn\u2019t lower your interest <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">per se<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it does keep all of your federal student loan repayment options open. What\u2019s more, the extended repayment period can lower your monthly obligation; affording you some much needed breathing room. However, increased cost will come with that relief. You\u2019ll pay more in interest over the life of the loan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What Are the Advantages?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of student loan consolidation include a single (and lower) monthly payment and a fixed interest rate \u2014\u00a0as opposed to an unpredictable variable one. You\u2019ll also get a choice of repayment plans, along with deferment and forbearance options. These can help you safeguard your credit score. You\u2019ll also qualify for income driven repayment options, as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentloanhero.com\/featured\/public-service-loan-forgiveness-do-you-qualify\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Service Loan Forgiveness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What Are the Disadvantages?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we mentioned above, you might make more interest payments because of the extended loan period. If you have private student loans too, you\u2019ll need to find another way to consolidate those. And again, you\u2019ll only get one shot at consolidation, so you\u2019ll have to be sure you can make it work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So, Should You Do It?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like so many other decisions of this nature, the key lies in determining whether the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.
