{"id":90597,"date":"2021-10-25T16:35:14","date_gmt":"2021-10-25T16:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/?p=90597"},"modified":"2021-10-25T16:35:14","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T16:35:14","slug":"advanced-stats-report-patriots-qb-mac-jones-is-improving-on-deep-throws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/?p=90597","title":{"rendered":"Advanced Stats Report: Patriots QB Mac Jones is Improving on Deep Throws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriots\u2019 blowout victory over the Jets gave us a glimpse into New England\u2019s potential as we approach the second half of the 2021 season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With rookie quarterback Mac Jones leading the offense to a 54-point explosion, the Pats\u2019 offensive line found a solid starting five that kept Jones clean on a season-high 79.5% of his drop-backs and paved the way for a 56% success rate on 27 rush attempts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Defensively, news broke on Monday morning that starting slot corner Jon Jones will miss the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury, making replacement Myles Bryant and third-year corner Joejuan Williams\u2019s even more important to the Pats&#8217; secondary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriots still have questions to answer in their secondary, and it\u2019s fair to wonder if their offense can replicate their execution in Sunday\u2019s win against better defenses in the future. Still, it was great to see an old-fashioned Patriots ass-kicking of their division rivals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Here are a variety of advanced stats from New England\u2019s 54-13 win over the Jets in Week 7:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">MAC JONES\u2019S PASSING METRICS\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although the Patriots\u2019 rookie quarterback graded out well, his accuracy metrics were down this week compared to most of his first six starts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jones\u2019s completion percentage over expected (-0.6) and adjusted completion rate (72.7%) were his second-lowest outputs of the season outside of the Week 3 loss to New Orleans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriots\u2019 offensive production is rapidly improving over the last three games, though, with Jones posting the ninth-best expected points added over that span.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-90607\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBEfficiency-2-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBEfficiency-2-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBEfficiency-2-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBEfficiency-2-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBEfficiency-2-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBEfficiency-2-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBEfficiency-2-2048x1152.png 2048w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBEfficiency-2-150x84.png 150w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBEfficiency-2-450x253.png 450w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBEfficiency-2-1200x675.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mac is now 16th in EPA+CPOE composite on the season, which combines both stats to rank the starting quarterbacks in the NFL (see chart above). Ranking 16th out of 33 QBs just seven starts in is impressive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-90601\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/MacDeep-300x109.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/MacDeep-300x109.png 300w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/MacDeep-150x55.png 150w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/MacDeep-450x164.png 450w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/MacDeep.png 483w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>(according to Pro Football Focus)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Another positive development for the Patriots\u2019 rookie is that he\u2019s becoming far more efficient on deep throws in the last two games, with five completions of 20-plus yards since Week 6.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 788px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-90597-1\" width=\"788\" height=\"443\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/MacDeepBall.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/MacDeepBall.mp4\">https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/MacDeepBall.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In Sunday\u2019s win, Jones was hunting for a big play against New York\u2019s single-high coverages all afternoon and finally hit on a 46-yarder to Kendrick Bourne. The throw was Mac\u2019s longest pass in terms of air distance this season and was right on the money from the Pats\u2019 QB.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jones was a terrific deep-ball thrower during his time at Alabama, but many evaluators chalked that up to the first-round playmakers around him on the Crimson Tide offense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although a two-game sample size isn\u2019t big enough to make any grand proclamations, Mac is certainly improving as a downfield thrower and adding more dimensions to his game each week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PASS PROTECTION STATS\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">T<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he main reason Jones is finding more success throwing deep is that the Patriots\u2019 offensive line is buying him more time to scan downfield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-90600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/OLine-300x105.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"657\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/OLine-300x105.png 300w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/OLine-150x53.png 150w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/OLine-450x158.png 450w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/OLine.png 574w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 657px) 100vw, 657px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This week, Mac was only under pressure on eight of his 39 drop-backs or 20.5%, the highest \u201ckept clean\u201d rate for the Patriots\u2019 quarterback through seven games this season, and Jones took advantage by adding 0.45 expected points per drop-backs (92nd percentile).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One thing remains clear: when the offensive line keeps Jones clean in the pocket, he\u2019s a tremendous passer, grading out as an elite quarterback when kept clean (90.9, ninth).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 788px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-90597-2\" width=\"788\" height=\"442\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/PatsRunBlocks.mp4?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/PatsRunBlocks.mp4\">https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/PatsRunBlocks.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Along with keeping Jones clean, the O-Line created huge holes for the Pats\u2019 running backs all afternoon, especially the Mason-Onwenu tandem on the right side (see above).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If the Patriots finally found a solid starting five along the offensive line in Sunday\u2019s win, that\u2019s a massive step forward for the offense as a whole (LT &#8211; Wynn, LG &#8211; Karras, C &#8211; Andrews, RG &#8211; Mason, RT &#8211; Onwenu).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DEFENSIVE PRESSURES &amp; RUN STOPS<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Once the offense blew the game open in the first half, the Patriots seemed to dial back the pressure on the Jets\u2019 quarterbacks, contributing to a low pressure rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jets quarterbacks Mike White and Zach Wilson were only under pressure on 20.5% of their 44 drop-backs. However, the Pats pressured Wilson on five of his 11 drop-backs and only blitzed White 24.2% of the time. In other words, they backed off in the second half.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-90599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBPressures-300x114.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"666\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBPressures-300x114.png 300w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBPressures-150x57.png 150w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBPressures-450x171.png 450w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/QBPressures.png 574w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Leading the way for the Pats\u2019 defense was Christian Barmore, who is having a great rookie campaign that longtime teammate Mac Jones overshadows. Barmore has 17 QB pressures on the season and is seeing a high double-team rate due to the nature of his role in the scheme. He\u2019s working effectively with others on interior stunts and consistently finds his way into the backfield.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 788px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-90597-3\" width=\"788\" height=\"443\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/BryantSack.mp4?_=3\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/BryantSack.mp4\">https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/BryantSack.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Along with Barmore, the early turning point of the game was a quick three-and-out by the Jets offense, thanks to a third-down sack by slot corner Myles Bryant. The Pats blitz Bryant over a condensed formation to Wilson&#8217;s left, allowing Bryant to disguise it, and use pass-rusher Josh Uche in a wide-nine technique to keep Wilson in the pocket.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriots&#8217; pass rush wasn\u2019t tested much because this one got out of hand quickly, but they were getting to Wilson early before the game turned into a blowout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">RUN STOPS<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Based on how our followers react to the Patriots&#8217; defense, it feels like many wouldn\u2019t expect that New England\u2019s run defense is one of the best in the league through seven games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Pats came into the week as the ninth-best run defense in Football Outsiders\u2019 DVOA metric and held the Jets to a 42 percent success rate and 3.6 yards per rush on Sunday, so that ranking ought to at least stay in the top ten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Leading the way with three run stops was Lawrence Guy, who was also responsible for holding the point of attack for teammates to make plays on a few other occasions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 788px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-90597-4\" width=\"788\" height=\"443\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/PatsFirstRunStop.mp4?_=4\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/PatsFirstRunStop.mp4\">https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/PatsFirstRunStop.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Here, Guy and nose tackle Carl Davis hold up the play side by pressing their blockers into the backfield, forcing Jets running back Michael Carter to stay inside the tackles, allowing linebacker Ja\u2019Whaun Bentley to fill the gap and make the stop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New England\u2019s defensive line is doing a much better job of keeping the linebacker level clean against the run this season, making it easier for big run-stuffers like Bentley to make plays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">COVERAGE STATS\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriots\u2019 secondary felt shaky again after two \u201cburn the tape\u201d performances in a row against Dallas and Houston, but the Jets didn\u2019t end up being that dangerous through the air.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-90598\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CoverageWeek7-300x103.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CoverageWeek7-300x103.png 300w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CoverageWeek7-600x207.png 600w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CoverageWeek7-150x52.png 150w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CoverageWeek7-450x155.png 450w, https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CoverageWeek7.png 763w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New York ended the game by adding a below-average 0.02 expected points per drop-back, and after a hot start, backup quarterback Mike White came back down to earth (-0.01 EPA per play).<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 788px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-90597-5\" width=\"788\" height=\"443\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/JCINT.mp4?_=5\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/JCINT.mp4\">https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/JCINT.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Still, combining top slot corner Jon Jones\u2019s season-ending injury with another iffy performance by Jalen Mills, J.C. Jackson is the only Pats\u2019 corner that you trust to play at a high level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jackson was good again, allowing only four catches on nine targets with a smooth interception on a comeback route by Jets rookie Elijah Moore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Pats also got decent production out of Jones\u2019s replacement in the slot, Myles Bryant, and third-year corner Joejuan Williams, the latter of which had arguably his best game as a Patriot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 788px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-90597-6\" width=\"788\" height=\"443\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/JoejuanPBU.mp4?_=6\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/JoejuanPBU.mp4\">https:\/\/www.clnsmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/JoejuanPBU.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Williams broke up three of his five targets into his coverage.
