The mystery of Kyrie Irving and whether he’ll re-sign with the Celtics will dominate headlines this offseason. If Irving leaves the Celtics must quickly turn their attention to figure out what they do next.
Former Celtics Kendrick Perkins believes the Celts don’t need to totally sell out to keep Kyrie.
“At the end of the day they finished 4th in the east,” Perkins told Adam Kaufman on the Celtics Beat Podcast on CLNS media. “I would take the same team and I guarantee you they still finished 4th in the East. I mean, it’s not like kyrie delivered something spectacular in the playoffs.”
Perkins believes not only would the Celtics be fine if Irving chose not to return but that they could easily fill his shoes.
“I know a lot of people who would love to go play in the city of Boston,” Perkins said. “A lot of superstars that would love to go play for that franchise.”
When pressed by Kaufman who he was referring to Perkins offered up a couple of intriguing alternatives.
“I’m pretty sure AD [Anthony Davis] wouldn’t mind playing in Boston, KD [Kevin Durant] wouldn’t mind playing in Boston. There’s guys out there that you could go get that could go play, especially with that Boston team that they already have.”
Perkins has played with both superstars, Davis in New Orleans and Durant in OKC.
Durant can opt out of his deal and become a free agent this year. Acquiring Davis would come at a cost. Most assume the price tag would include at least one of the two Celtics young starts, Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum.
Most around the NBA feel Tatum is the better long term asset. Not Perk though.
“I see more out of Jaylen Brown. He brings a whole different dynamic to the team. He’s a two way player. Defensively he takes ownership and pride. I love Jaylen Brown.”
