Despite all the recent rumors tying Kyrie Irving to the Brooklyn Nets the New York Knicks are still the odds on favorites to land the mercurial point guard in free agency, according the online betting site BetOnline.ag.
The Knicks at -150, with the Nets at plus 150 are the top two contenders. The Celtics are considered a distant 3rd along with LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Both Stephen A Smith and the well sourced Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN have tied Kyrie to Brooklyn in recent days.
Smith added recently that Irving’s decision to go to Brooklyn was contingent on him being able to convince Kevin Durant to play there as well. Durant’s preferred destination appears to be the Knicks, hence the belief that he could pull Kyrie to New York along with him.
Irving can opt out of his deal with the Celtics and become a free agent on July 1st.
On Wednesday Celtics President of Basketball Operations Kyrie Irving met with the media and sounded less than confident Irving would return to Boston next season.
“I don’t know,” Ainge said of whether Irving was still planning to re-sign. “There’s not much I can say about that, honestly. But there are ongoing conversations. We just have to wait and see what happens there.”
“We made a risk by trading for Kyrie, and no matter what happens for Kyrie, I’ll never regret that,” said Ainge. “You just move on to the next deal.”
