ESPN’s Fran Fraschilla joined Jeff Goodman to talk about Kansas’ “rough” season. I put rough in quotation marks because 12-2 is usually an incredible season for most programs. But sports is all about “What have you done for me lately?” And lately the Jayhawks have lost not only to Iowa State, but also their junior big man Udoka Azubuike for the season. Dedric Lawson has sensational numbers for Bill Self’s squad, but you can’t solely rely on him to pick up all the slack. Can Lagerald Vick elevate his game? Does Kansas have the depth to compete in a strong Big-12 field this year?
Meanwhile, Jarrett Culver has led his Texas Tech squad to a top-10 ranking. The only blemish for the Red Raiders is a loss to Duke. There’s something special going on in Ames, Iowa as well. Iowa State has won five-in-a-row, including a 17-point win over the Jayhawks. Jamie Dixon’s TCU Horned Frogs have won nine straight and just broke into the top-25. Could this be the year Shaka Smart’s Texas teams get it together? It seems like the field in the Big-12 could be a little deeper this year. That being said, both Fran and Jeff caution fans about the mystic of Allen Fieldhouse. It’s just hard to win games there if you’re a road team.
Fran gives his opinions on who should take over for Steve Alford at UCLA. Both Jeff and Fran agree how poor the PAC-12 is this year. UCLA needs to save the conference. This hire might be one of the most important in all of college basketball. What would it take for the Bruins to hire Rick Pitino. Jeff lays out the only scenario where the hire could go smoothly.
