The Celtics have a winning problem. Vegas pegged this team for 50-plus wins. Some national pundits scoffed at that win total number. 60 wins is more like it! Hell, even I fell into that trap. But as the calendar turns towards the All Star Break it is looking more likely that the one-seed is out of the question. Moreover, obtaining the two-seed seems like a stretch too.
Who deserves most of the blame?
This is the crux of this week’s Good ‘N Plenty episode. Host Jeff Goodman sits with The Athletic’s Jay King to discuss how much of this is on Boston’s head coach Brad Stevens. Both guys agreed that he definitely deserves some of the blame for not getting these guys to gel together by now.
King suggests that Steven’s biggest flaw was relying on Gordon Hayward so much at the beginning of the season. It’s understandable too. Hayward and Stevens have a history together. Brad had faith in Hayward before anyone else. He wants to use that faith to give Hayward the confidence he needs to get back to the old Gordon Hayward. However, thinking that Hayward was capable of playing big minutes on a contender was misguided. Foolish even. As a result it cost the team important wins at the beginning of the season. Because of this the Celtics are playing catch-up.
In spite of Gordon’s troubles, Goodman and King debate over which Celtics player is best suited to take a bigger role on the team. The conversation naturally shifts towards Jaylen Brown. The younger guys on the team had huge roles last year and thrived. It’s reasonable to believe that Jaylen would relish those minutes.
Can Celtics land Davis without giving up Tatum?
Finally Jeff and Jay finish up with the Celtics pursuit of Anthony Davis. Can Boston land the Pelicans star without adding their budding one? Moreover, is Boston’s war-chest of picks declining in value?
