Playing without Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving, the Boston Celtics dropped their preseason finale on the road at the Cleveland Cavaliers 113-102. In the process, Marcus Smart was ejected for engaging in an altercation with JR Smith, who received a technical foul for shoving Aaron Baynes in the first quarter.
Boston was led by 17 points each from Marcus Morris and Terry Rozier, but it was a wire-to-wire win by Cleveland. The Cavs led by as many as 21, and got 20 points from former Celtic Ante Zizic to lead the way. No. 8 overall pick Collin Sexton had 13 points.
Boston shot just 39.3 percent overall and was 7 of 24 from three-point land. Al Horford added 10 points and seven assists, but after the game told reporters, “We have a lot of work ahead. That’s just the reality of it. There are no excuses. We have a lot of work to do.”
The loss leaves Boston an uninspiring 1-3 in the preason, with opening night less than 10 days away.
