The Los Angeles Lakers made a big move this summer when they traded Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and multiple first-round picks to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for superstar big man Anthony Davis. The Lakers are banking on Davis and LeBron James becoming one of the best duos in the league as they look to return to their former glory.
However, trading for Davis is still something of a risk. As Trevor Lane explains on the Lakers Nation News Feed, Davis will be a free agent next summer, and a recent rumor suggests that agent Rich Paul may already have his eye on an escape plan just in case things fall apart in Los Angeles.
According to a rumor from Marc Berman of the New York Post, Paul likes the idea of having Davis in New York in the event that the Lakers situation falls apart. This can’t be good news for the Lakers, who need Davis to re-sign with them next summer.
That said, last season Davis pushed hard to get to Los Angeles. making it known that he would leave other suitors, like the Boston Celtics, in free agency. Given all that he had to go through to get to the Lakers and finally team up with James, it would be shocking to see him change his mind so quickly. Assuming the Lakers season features at least some success he should stick around.
Still, until Davis officially inks a new contract with the Lakers, there will be uneasiness in Los Angeles as teams like the Knicks and others circle with the hope of prying him away.
