Back in my day St. John’s was a competent program. Full disclosure: I graduated college in 2012, so it’s not like I’m far removed from the college scene. However, I do not remember the “good ol’ days” of the Big East in the 80’s. I unfortunately did not see Chris Mullen, Patrick Ewing, Pearl Washington, Mark Jackson, Ed Pinckney, Walter Berry, among others.
Ultimately, I’ve never seen the Red Storm atop the basketball world. Hell my fondest memory is Michael Carter-Williams throwing it down on God’sgift Achiuwa during MCW’s freshman campaign (for reference click here). But I long for a world where St. John’s is at least relevant. Basketball is better when New York City is involved. And as much as I love Syracuse it would be nice to have a rivalry in a building called “the Mecca”.
The Red Storm recently hired Arkansas coach Mike Anderson and the college basketball world is split on it. Jeff Goodman is passionate that it is not the right hire and brought on former SEC coach Andy Kennedy to talk about it.
