At some point the Celtics might just have to take a hint. Anthony Davis does not want to play in Boston.
Or at least that’s what his agent Rich Paul is strongly hinting.
Paul told SI that IF the Celtics trade for Davis the New Orleans big man will not sign an extension and will instead test free agency next offseason.
“They can trade for him, but it’ll be for one year. I mean: If the Celtics traded for Anthony Davis, we would go there and we would abide by our contractual [obligations] and we would go into free agency in 2020. I’ve stated that to them. But in the event that he decides to walk away and you give away assets? Don’t blame Rich Paul.”
The Celtics have long been linked to Davis and would need to load up to try and acquire him. Any deal for Davis would likely involve some combination of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, picks AND additional parts as well.
While Paul specifically singled out the Celtics he also made clear that Davis won’t sign an extension with any team before next offseason regardless of where that ends up being.
“Where he’s going to land? I have no idea. And it don’t matter. We’re going into free agency. Why does it matter to me where he goes? Earth: We’re going into free agency. He has a year, he has to play. But after that, I can’t say it no bigger: WE ARE GOING INTO FREE AGENCY. 2020: ANTHONY DAVIS WILL BE IN FREE AGENCY.”
Paul didn’t say it but it seems likely that the Lakers would be the exception since Paul has tried hard to steer Davis there to joins his other high profile client LeBron James.
The subtext behind ALL of Paul’s maneuvering is clear. To all teams, don’t trade for David UNLESS you’re the Lakers. And to the New Orleans Pelicans, take what LA is offering and be thankful for the opportunity.
