Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski isn’t planning on returning to the NFL.
At least not yet.
Gronkowski – who retired back in March – left the door open for a return to football during a press conference in New York to announce he will be an advocate for players to be allowed to use CBD products for pain relief.
Gronk said physically he could play right now, but mentally, he’s just not ready.
“Not in the foreseeable future, in like a week or a month,” said Rob Gronkowski. “Maybe down the road. I have to have that passion. I have to have the fire… I’m not going to go out there and be beat the F— up. That’s not the way to live.”
Gronk was also very emotional when discussing why he decided to walk away from the game.
“I want to be clear to my fans. I needed to recover. I was not in a good place. Football was bringing me down, and I didn’t like it. I was losing that joy in life,” said Gronkowski choking back tears.

Gronkowski was also very emotional talking about the moment he knew he had to walk away. After taking a hit to the quad in Super Bowl LIII. It was after that he knew he was done.
“I got done with the game and I could barely walk,” he said. “I slept five minutes that night. I couldn’t even think. I was in tears in my bed after a Super Bowl victory. It didn’t make that much sense to me. And then, for four weeks, I couldn’t even sleep for more than 20 minutes a night. I was like, ‘Damn, this sucks.’ It didn’t feel good.”
Over his career Gronkowski has suffered countless injuries dating back to his playing days at the University of Arizona (back, arm, torn ACL/MCL, bruised lung, concussions.)
Which is why Gronk says he has taken this path. Working alongside CBDMedic, a product from Woonsocket, Rhode Island’s Abacus Medical Products. CBD is what Gronk has been using during his recovery, and he says it is the reason why he feels the way he feels right now.
“For the first time in more than a decade, I am pain-free,” said Gronkowski. “I’m advocating for CBD to be acceptable for all players to be used for recovery. I’m here today to appeal to the sports governing bodies of the world to update their position on CBD — whether that’s the NBA, MLB or NFL — it’s just time.”
