The Eastern conference playoff race just got a whole lot tighter.

Like thieves in the night the Philadelphia 76ers swung a blockbuster deal to acquire Clippers wing Tobias Harris. The News was first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The move now gives the 76ers arguably the best starting 5 in the conference (Harris, Joel Embiid, Jimmy Butler, Ben Simmons, JJ Redick) It’s a win now move that also sets up the Sixers to be a major player in the conference for years to come should they be able to hold onto Harris and the big 3 of Embiid, Butler & Simmons.

The full deal has Philadelphia getting Harris, center Boban Marjanovic and forward Mike Scott in exchange for forward Wilson Chandler, guard Landry Shamet, center Mike Muscala, Philadelphia’s 2020 first-round pick, the Miami Heat’s unprotected 2021 first-round pick and two second-rounders.

It’s unlikely the Celtics (currently tied with Philadelphia for 3rd best record in the Conference) can do anything to counter the 76ers this year as the Boston holds onto all its trade chips in an effort to land Anthony Davis this offseason.

The Clippers trading Harris and shifting into rebuild mode also hurts the Celtics down the road. Boston stands to gain a first round pick from the Clippers should they make the playoffs either of the next two seasons. If they don’t that pick turns into two second rounders.

At the time of the trade the Clippers were 8th in the Western Conference but seem surely to fall back in the standings.

The NBA trade deadline is Thursday at 3pm Eastern.
