Two Red Sox Players Up For 2017 MLB Awards

The MLB announced the finalists for their awards yesterday and two Boston Red Sox players will look to take home some hardware.

Chris Sale was nominated for the CY Young award, which goes to the best pitcher of the 2017 season. If Sale wins, it will be his first career time winning. Sale has finished top five in the voting in each of the last five seasons. The other two nominees are Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians and Luis Severino of the New York Yankees.

Sale was incredible for the Red Sox this season finishing with a 17-8 record, 0.97 WHIP, and 2.90 ERA. He also had 308 strikeouts, which lead the league handidly. He was just five strikeouts away from the Red Sox record in a season held by Pedro Martinez.

Andrew Benintendi was nominated for American League rookie of the year. After showing flashes in the 2016 season, Benintendi was the heavy favorite to win the award heading into this year. Like Sale though, Benintendi will have strict compeitiion. The other two nominees are Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Trey Mancini of the Baltimore Orioles.

Benintendi had a great rookie season for the Sox batting in the middle of the lineup. He had 186 hits with an average of .271 with 20 homers and 90 RBI’s. He also swiped 20 stolen bases as he looks to become the first Red Sox to win the award since Dustin Pedroia in 2007.

Both Sale and Benintendi come in as underdogs as Judge and Kluber are the favorites. The Rookie of the Year Award will be announced on November 13th and the Cy Young will be announced November 15th.
