Patriots Training Camp 20: Marcus Jones Shines, Red Zone Offense Cools

The Patriots hosted their second joint session with the Philadelphia Eagles for their 20th training camp practice. The focus was on the red zone and half-field work, including end-of-half situations later in the afternoon.

Here’s a look at today’s attendance and my top observations on a hot, cloudy day in Foxborough.

Attendance

Absent: CB Christian Gonzalez, ED Xavier Holmes, IOL Ben Brown, FB Reggie Gilliam, CB Channing Canada

Physically Unable to Perform: ED Harold Landry III

Non-Football Injury: ST Brenden Schooler

  • Drake Maye was red hot to start today’s practice, especially when targeting A.J. Brown in tight windows. Brown beat Quinyon Mitchell for three scores during 1-on-1s and 2-on-2s in the low red zone, then carried that success to team drills with a defensive pass interference drawn, a tight slant completion on a throw away from coverage, and a contested touchdown on a late throw to the front left pylon. Maye also punched in scores on a Mack Hollins crosser off play action and a perfectly-placed out to Romeo Doubs in the back right corner of the end zone. The tide turned in the Eagles’ favor during the latter half of practice, during which Riq Woolen intercepted Maye twice on throws to Brown. The first was a late, forced throw that Woolen undercut for a would-be pick-six. The second came on a slant where Woolen jarred the ball from Brown’s grasp, causing a tip that was scooped off the turf by Jalyx Hunt. Philadelphia also shut down vertical throws to Hollins and Doubs. To Maye’s credit, he finished strong by hitting a wide-open Doubs in the end zone to cap an end-of-half situation.
  • The top run game continued to create holes consistently after running into a wall on the first snap of team periods, but pass protection was leakier than it was yesterday.
  • Marcus Jones intercepted Jalen Hurts twice today, bringing his total to three picks in two joint practices. Jones capitalized on a tipped ball for the first steal, then undercut a throw to Dontayvion Wicks later in practice.
  • Kayshon Boutte popped multiple times during team periods, getting open deep on an overthrown fade from Maye, making himself available on a Tommy DeVito scramble drill, scoring on a contested fade to the front pylon, and drawing a hold in the end zone.
  • Elijah Ponder flashed against the Eagles’ starting offensive line, batting a pass and chasing Hurts out of the pocket on an incompletion.
  • Cory Durden added to his impressive summer, notching a would-be sack and drawing a hold during team periods.
  • Kyle Williams continued to have success against Kelee Ringo in 1-on-1s, winning on a slant and a contested dig. Williams also beat former Patriot Shaun Wade for a deep touchdown on a go ball.
