Patriots Training Camp 13: Romeo Doubs Makes Pair of Highlight Grabs

Romeo Doubs' budding chemistry with Drake Maye was the highlight during a slower-paced practice in shells and shorts.

The Patriots went with a lighter practice ahead of tomorrow’s joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts. Players wore shells and participated in mostly slower-paced team drills, with the most competitive periods coming during end-of-half situations with 1:05 on the clock.

Here’s a look at New England’s attendance and what I noticed on a hot, partly cloudy day in Foxborough.

Attendance

Absent: DI Christian Barmore, CB Charles Woods, LS Julian Ashby, WR Kyle Dixon

Physically Unable to Perform: ED Harold Landry III

Non-Football Injury: ST Brenden Schooler

Injured Reserve: WR Jeremiah Webb, WR Jimmy Kibble, TE Julian Hill

Notebook

  • The Patriots grabbed headlines before taking the practice field, signing three-time captain Hunter Henry to a two-year, $16 million extension worth up to $20 million with $14.5 million guaranteed and a $4.2 million signing bonus, per Adam Schefter. Henry called the extension “a blessing” and expressed his gratitude toward New England and the Patriots organization.
  • Will Campbell was a full participant after sitting out one practice last week and missing another, though he’s still sporting a brace on his left arm. Carlton Davis III was seen on the field for the first time since July 18, but he didn’t participate in team drills and left practice early.
  • Caleb Lomu and Marcus Bryant appeared to swap sides on the backup offensive line today, with Lomu lining up on the left and Bryant on the right. Lomu had his best day of 1-on-1s following the switch, going 3-0 in the drill, per Patriot.com’s Evan Lazar, though he faced all backups in Quintayvious Hutchins, Jesse Luketa, and Xavier Holmes. Both Lomu and Bryant players swapped in for Morgan Moses at times, with Bryant taking the majority of those opportunities.
  • Drake Maye and the starters took a couple of plays to get going during their end-of-half opportunity, with Maye throwing back-to-back incompletions on downfield throws to Romeo Doubs and Kayshon Boutte. But after moving the ball on short throws to Hunter Henry, Rhamondre Stevenson, and Eli Raridon, Maye followed up an incomplete go ball to A.J. Brown (tight coverage from Christian Gonzalez) with a slant to Boutte and an end zone fade to Doubs, who arguably made the catch of the day by mossing Gonzalez in the corner. Maye and Doubs’ budding chemistry also flashed on the next possession, when the two connected on a back-shoulder ball against Gonzalez.
  • Efton Chism III also made a strong case for catch of the day, pulling off his latest twisting, contested end zone grab with Marcellas Dial in coverage.
  • Kindle Vildor is the latest Patriots cornerback to stack positive training camp practices. After going 2-0 when targeted against Brown on Friday, Vildor popped again by smothering Doubs on a go ball.
  • Tommy DeVito seems to be getting better by the week. After a spotty start to the summer, particularly when it comes to ball placement, DeVito has been more consistently accurate and seems to have at least one noteworthy play each week. Today, it was a drop in the bucket down the sideline to Kyle Williams, who did an impressive job tracking the throw with Channing Canada tight in coverage.
  • With Julian Ashby absent, the Patriots brought back long snapper Niko Lalos, who was seen wearing #54.
