Bicycle Maintenance Tips Every Cyclist Should Know

Playing sports is one thing everyone should do at one point or another in their lifetime. It will help you get in better shape and your mental state will also significantly improve, as long as you keep practicing. Your entire lifestyle changes for the best in the long run. Cycling is one of the best options you could go with, because it not only offers great exercise for the entire body but also gives you a very cool adventure while you’re out on the road, exploring new places and meeting new people. The most important item in your gear is the bicycle, but before you get one, there are some bicycle maintenance tips that you and every cyclist should know.

Take Care of Your Drivetrain

Learning how to properly take care of your drivetrain is a must, and it’s something every cyclist should know how to do. If you don’t take care of that part of your bicycle, you’ll be confronted with really annoying rattling sounds and terrible squeaking noise coming from your chain and sprockets. This happens because your drivetrain isn’t well lubricated or cleaned, which results in metal parts rubbing against other parts as well as mud and grime. This can really damage your bike and significantly shorten its lifespan. Those parts aren’t cheap or easy to replace, so do yourself a favor and constantly lubricate and clean that area.

Check Special Parts

There are some special bicycles out there that come with unique additions, like mountain bikes. Those come with the extra systems to endure rough terrain, dirt hills, bumpy routes, and not to mention slopes. If you’re consistent with maintaining it properly, then you know it’s important to have suspension systems for bicycles that need specific tips because by using suspension, the bike becomes isolated from the roughness of the terrain. You’ll have to check just how smooth and functional the system is, and it can be really dangerous to go on a mountain expedition on your bike without a properly maintained suspension system.

Tire Inspection

It goes without saying, regularly inspecting your tires to ensure they are good is a must. The last thing you want is getting a flat tire in the middle of your ride, especially if you’re not prepared with the extra tire replacement gear. This is why you should always inspect your tires and make sure their pressure is good –– get yourself a decent floor pump; it’s an essential tool that any cyclist should have. Proper inflation aside, you need to consistently check for other signs of wear and tear, as that might cause sudden problems on the road.

Checking Nuts and Bolts

A bicycle is a fairly simple machine; it consists of a mechanical system and a body. But that entire system is connected using bolts and nuts which are bound to loosen with time and continuous rides. You have to regularly check those to make sure they’re not lax, but don’t tighten them too much as to not overstrain the parts.

Brakes Maintenance

You really don’t want to be heading downhill and find a sudden bus or truck ahead of you, without your brakes. There is a ton of important checks you need to do to ensure that your bike is in great condition, but the brakes are quite probably the most important because it is the one part that can save your life. What you need to do is regularly check on the condition of the brakes between rides. Once they start feeling soft, it is then probably an indication that your brake pads need to be changed.

Professional Services

While it is important that you learn the essentials like how to handle a flat tire or check your brakes, it is still very important that you have your bike checked by professionals regularly. You should take it to a service center periodically to ensure that everything is in excellent condition, because the professionals there can definitely find problems that you might have missed.

The best thing is we live in an age where everything is online, and you could easily learn how to fix a flat tire even if it’s your first bike, as well as a million other things that will help you keep your ride in excellent shape. So, take advantage of the different resources you’ll find online, and see what experts have to say on the matter. The most important aspect of your bike’s maintenance routine is consistency, this that way your bicycle will have a long lifespan.
