BREAKING: Patriots sign Cam Newton to 1 Year Deal

The search for Tom Brady’s replacement takes an interesting turn. The Patriots have agreed to terms with quarterback Cam Newton according to multiple reports.

It’s a one-year inventive laden deal with a low base salary.

Newton will come in to compete for the starting job with fellow Auburn alum Jared Stidham and presumed backup Brian Hoyer.

Newton missed almost all of last season after suffering a foot injury in the preseason vs the Patriots. He played in 2 games before being shut down for the season.

Newton was the number-1 overall pick in the 2011 Draft. in 9 seasons he has a 68-55-1 record as a starter with 29,041 passing yards, 182 touchdowns. Though he hasn’t shown it as much the past two seasons, when healthy Newton is. prolific runner with nearly 5000 yards on the ground to go along with 58 rushing touchdowns.

The No. 1 overall pick from the 2011 NFL Draft, Newton has a 3-4 career playoff record, and led the Panthers to Super Bowl 50 in 2016, where they fell to a vaunted Broncos defense by a 24-10 final.

Here’w what Evan Lazar wrote about Newton back when Brady initially bolted for the Bucs.

We are huge believers of Cam Newton here, but he admittedly has a much different playing style than what we are used to in New England, and is deteriorating physically.

Newton has never been an accurate quarterback, but in a high-volume vertical passing attack with an added element of a mobile quarterback, think RPOs and other schemes to play 11-on-11, Newton was once MVP of the league and undeniably talented.

The Patriots could be the perfect landing spot for Newton to re-start his career, and it was not that long ago, 2018, to be exact, that Newton was an above-average starter in the NFL.
