There is nothing left for the Boston Bruins to accomplish. Not in the regular season at least.
With a 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals the Bruins set yet another record on Tuesday night, most points in a regular season with 133, surpassing the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens.
The latest record comes 2 days after the Bruins set the NHL mark for wins in a regular season with 63.
“We have a very special group. It’s incredible how we’ve come together this year,” Bruins veteran winger Brad Marchand said. “We’ve done a phenomenal job all year of staying in the moment. We’re proud of the group, but this is a regular-season record. That’s not what we’re playing for. We have our sights set on much bigger goals.”
Brad Marchand got the scoring started snapping a 16 game scoreless drought with a power-play goal in the second, his 21st of the season. Tyler Bertuzzi added a power play goal of his own less than 6 minutes later to make it 2-0.
After Washington cut the lead to 2-1 Tomas Nosek put the Bruins back up two early in the 3rd. The Capitals Tom Wilson cut the lead to one once again with a power play goal at 7:13 of the third period. But the Bruins restored a two goal cushion on a goal by Garnet Hathaway. Jake DeBrusk added an empty netter to account for the 5-2 final score.
The Bruins suffered an injury scare when goaltender Linus Ullmark left the game in the third period after appearing to tweak something. Head coach Jim Montgomery said after the game that Ullmark was removed for precautionary reasons and the injury is not considered serious.
