Jayson Tatum scored 60 points to tie Larry Bird for the most points in a Celtics game by a single player, and he needed all of them to complete a 32-point comeback that marked the third largest deficit overcome in NBA history. Both feats occurred during a marathon night of history that allowed the Celtics to stay tied with the Hawks for the fifth seed in the east and avoid falling into the play-in tournament.
Tatum hit go-ahead shots in the 4th quarter and overtime, scored nearly every Celtics point in the first quarter and hit 20-of-37 from the field in a night that should’ve ended with him owning the Celtics scoring record. A foul called on the ground would’ve resulted in a three-point play and 61 points if called in continuation with four seconds left.
Aaron Nesmith provided 16 points, including multiple game-tying buckets late as he closed with the starters again while grabbing rebounds and recording the game-sealing steal. Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart struggled offensively, but hit a pair of clutch threes in the fourth, while DeMar DeRozan tortured Boston’s defense into the final seconds of an instant classic. Celtics Post Game put it in historic perspective after.
