Tatum Drops 54, Celtics Outlast Nets 126-120

The Celtics welcome the Brooklyn Nets to town with Kyrie Irving in tow. With the Nets as close to full strength as they’ve been in months, the Celtics were certainly facing a stiff challenge between Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, but thanks to a stellar performance from Jayson Tatum, the Celtics beat the Nets 126-120 in a thrilling finish. Jayson Tatum notched 54 PTS, tying the Celtics franchise record held by Larry Bird for most 50 PT games by a player.

“You look at these guys, like Marcus the birthday boy today, and you forget how young they are,” said Ime Udoka, “They’re 24, 25, 26, 27, 28. You forget that when they step up to the other team’s alphas. What they do at this age is really impressive.”

On the team’s developing consistency in closing out games, Marcus Smart said “It just shows our resiliency. It shows the growth that we’ve made and continue to make.” Smart celebrated his 28th birthday today.

“Today, this man to the left was unstoppable,” said Jaylen Brown on Jayson Tatum’s big night against Brooklyn. “That was the major thing. But we’re figuring things out. We’re getting better at that part of the game.”

Brown said “I think we still have yet to hit our peak.”
