Patriots Add to Offense with Signing of Tight End Mike Gesicki

The Patriots have added another weapon for quarterback Mac Jones.

According to multiple reports, New England has agreed to terms with tight end Mike Gesicki on a one-year contract. The contract is worth upwards of $9 million according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Gesicki was drafted by Miami in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft and played his first five seasons with the Dolphins. His best year came in 2021 when he hauled in 73 catches for 780 yards. He has 18 career touchdown receptions, and his 6’6″, 250-pound frame allows him a massive catch radius. A quarterbacks dream.

On Wednesday night, it was discovered that Mac Jones recently followed Gesicki on Instagram and that Gesicki followed the Patriots on Twitter. While it may have seemed like nothing at the time, there was clearly something in the works.

New England has now added JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Robinson, and Mike Gesicki to the offense, essentially in exchange for Jakobi Meyers, Damien Harris, and Jonnu Smith. That’s a win. This is what the Patriots’ skill position group looks like as of Friday:

QB Mac Jones

RB Rhamondre Stevenson, James Robinson

WR Juju Smith-Schuster, DeVante Parker, Kendrick Bourne, Tyquan Thornton

TE Hunter Henry, Mike Gesicki

In order to truly take the next step, they need one more piece. They need to add a wide receiver “1” that can dictate coverage and allow newly hired offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien to find (and win) matchups against opposing defenses.

According to Benjamin Allbright, New England is among the teams that are inquiring about Jerry Jeudy. Jeudy won’t be cheap, as Denver is reportedly asking for a first-round pick or a second-round pick plus a player. The Patriots could make this work with pick 46 and an asset.

They are also reportedly in on free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham tore his ACL in the 2021 Super Bowl with the Rams, but held a workout in Arizona last week (that the Patriots attended) and looks healthy. However, he’s supposedly asking for upwards of $15-$20 million per year on his next contract, a steep price for an age-31 pass catcher who just missed an entire season of football.

Regardless of where they go next, the addition of Mike Gesicki adds yet another element to this Patriots offense that so desperately needed it after last season.
