Players Retained: QB Cam Newton, DB Justin Bethel, DE Deatrich Wise, C David Andrews, K Nick Folk.
The Patriots are also getting back LB Dont’a Hightower and RB Brandon Bolden who sat out last season with Covid. Marcus Cannon and Patrick Chung also skipped last season. Cannon was traded to the Texans and Chung decided to retire.
Breakdown: While the Patriots Super Bowl odds have moved they are not considered a serious contender. Not yet.
There are are still 9 teams with more favorable championship odds. The main reason. Quarterback. The Patriots are not and will not be considered a serious threat to make it to the Super Bowl with Cam Newton as their quarterback.
Now it remains possible that the Patriots will still make a move at quarterback. Whether it be to trade up in the draft for someone like Trey Lance or wait out the 49ers for Jimmy Garoppolo.
