First to the Floor
Sports fandom can be tough. Tragic, even. No fanbase is more aware of this than that of the Boston Celtics. Enter First to the Floor, your Boston Celtics spirit guide. Humor-soaked analysis, regular guest appearances, “fan therapy” episodes after difficult games, and the best (and worst) of the Celtics online discourse. Subscribe here on Youtube, or check out the audio version on your preferred podcast platform. — The audio podcast is current published on the CelticsBlog podcast feed: https://

A youth coach posted a clip teaching kids to turn and run on defense instead of sliding their feet, and basketball social media lost its mind. Coach Larry Umaña of T2S Basketball Academy joins the show to explain what the viral video actually showed, why the shuffle slide breaks down against real speed, and why so much of the hostility around defensive fundamentals comes from people who have never had to teach it.
Coach Nick and Larry get into the experiment behind the clip, the difference between exaggerating a movement to teach it and coaching it live, the Constraints Led idea of letting players discover what works instead of dictating it, and why the loudest pushback tends to show up around defense specifically. Plus Nick’s own behind the ball zone, what happened when a D2 team begged to keep running it, and why “you’ll just get crossed up” misses the entire point of funneling a driver into help.

Welcome to First to the Floor, a Boston Celtics channel bringing you levelheaded overreactions, occasional coherent analysis, and a few laughs (we hope). The First to the Floor team, Ben Vallis, Jake Issenberg, and Wayne Spooney, might not be traditional members of the media, but that’s some of our charm. As part of the CLNS Network, we have unique access to great guests like Abby Chin, Chris Forsberg, Drew Carter, and sometimes we even let Barstool’s Dan Greenberg join. No matter how you like your Celtics content, we’ve got you covered. Between full-length pods, live game watch-a-longs, articles for Celticsblog, clips, and film breakdowns, let us be your spot for everything Celtics. We aren’t in this for the money (otherwise we’d all be homeless by now), we do it because it’s fun. And what makes it fun is interacting with our listeners. F2TF isn’t just a podcast, it’s a community. So, jump into the community, join the Discord, subscribe on YouTube and your favorite podcast app.
