The Philadelphia 76ers are a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association. They have won three NBA Championships, in 1955, 1967 and 1983. They have also been runners-up six times in 1943, 1975, 1980, 2001, 2004 and 2018. This article explores their history from the 1940s to 2019.

In 1943, they won their first championship when they defeated the New York Knicks in a four-game series. In 1947, the team drafted George Mikan but he retired before playing with them due to his deteriorating health. In 1949 they drafted Charles Barkley who played with them from 1984 to 1992 and again from 1994 to 2000.
