Jared Wilson Gaining Ground in LG Competition

Rookie Jared Wilson followed an inconsistent first day in pads with one of Tuesday’s best practice performances.

Despite Cole Strange repping with starters during warm-ups, Wilson was the top left guard during competitive periods. The rookie went undefeated in 1-on-1s, beating Christian Barmore twice and notching another win over Milton Williams.

Wilson continued to hold his own during team drills, where he started between Garrett Bradbury and Will Campbell. When working with the second group, Wilson shifted back to center with Strange or Caedan Wallace taking over at guard. Wallace also saw extensive work at left guard with the starting unit.

Two padded practices aren’t enough to make definitive statements, especially when it comes to rookies. But if Wilson stays on his current trajectory, he could have a starting spot locked up by preseason.

Notebook

  • Per Jordan Schultz, Christian Gonzalez suffered a hamstring injury but should be ready for Week 1. The cornerback made an appearance in street clothes with a black sleeve on his left leg.
  • Drake Maye was shaky in today’s Red Zone-heavy practice. He had multiple inaccurate attempts, highlighted by a deep miss to Kyle Williams and a wide outside throw to Hunter Henry later in the day. He also fumbled a snap from Garrett Bradbury that led to the backups taking over. But in typical Maye fashion, the quarterback largely finished on a high note. Later team periods included drops in the bucket to Williams (end zone fade),  Stefon Diggs (crosser), and Kayshon Boutte (out-breaker) for scores. Maye also had a well-placed backshoulder fade that Williams couldn’t haul in.
  • Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels debuted the QB run game for the first time in camp. Dobbs told reporters McDaniels wants to maximize Maye’s athleticism in scoring territory.
  • K’Lavon Chaisson earned a sack against backup Yasir Durant and has consistently been in the backfield the past two practices.
  • Will Campbell dominated 1-on-1s, beating Keion White and Chaisson, but he struggled against White during team drills and allowed a sack.
  • Javon Baker made a big play for the second time this summer, mossing Marcellas Dial on a Dobbs jump ball in the end zone. It was easily the catch of the day, but Baker lined up incorrectly a few plays later, forcing the offense to burn a time out and reset.
  • Kendrick Bourne shook Marcus Jones on an out-breaker for a low Red Zone score.
  • Demontrey Jacobs was the top right tackle with Morgan Moses limited. This caused a domino effect on the second line where left tackle Marcus Bryant flipped sides with third-stringer Durant replacing him on the blindside.
  • Garrett Bradbury walked off the field gingerly after getting caught at the bottom of a pile late in practice. He did not participate in laps at the end of practice.
  • After not kicking field goals yesterday, Andres Borregales matched Parker Romo‘s Monday performance by going 6-for-6 today.
  • D.J. James made the most of his extending playing opportunity, forcing a pair of incompletions early in practice. James has gotten his hands on multiple passes this offseason.
  • Jabrill Peppers knocked a DeMario Douglas target loose on a goal line rep, preventing a touchdown.
  • Marcus Epps quickly read and shut down a bubble screen to Douglas.
  • Jack Westover lined up at fullback with Brock Lampe absent.
  • There was a new linebacker at practice wearing 46. He’s believed to be former UFL player R.J. Moten.
